Travel Tips for Nosy Be

* Travel to Nosy Be is possible throughout the year. However, April to January is usually the most pleasant period. You can easily travel to Madagascar from Europe, East- and Southern-Africa (Nairobi, Jo'bourg) as well as from almost all of the Indian Ocean islands (Mayotte, Reunion, Mauritius).

From Europe and Africa you are normaly arriving in Antananarivo (=Tana), the capital of Madagascar with connection to Nosy Be. From Paris CDG either to Tana with Air Madagascar, Air France and Corsairfly; or with Air Austral to Reunion with direct connection to Nosy Be. From Marseille to Tana with Air Madagascar. The Air Madagascar direct flight every Wednesday evening from Paris (CDG) to Nosy Be non stop and Thursday evening return is for the moment cancelled due to the newly employed aircraft B777 instead of B767. Air Italy and Neos are flying from Mailand via Rom to Nosy Be directly but mainly for the Italian "all inclusive " hotels on Nosy Be.

There are convenient flights by Air Madagascar from and to Johannesburg. Every Saturday from Johannesburg non stop to Nosy Be and from Nosy Be to Jo'burg via Tana. Every Tuesday direct from Nosy Be non stop to Jo'burg and  from Jo'burg to Nosy Be via Tana. Visitors travelling between the Indian Ocean islands may also fly directly to Nosy Be. (e.g.: from REUNION or MAYOTTE with Air Madagascar & Air Austral). Between Jo'burg and Tana are daily flights with SAAirlink or Air Madagascar, some of them with direct connections to Nosy Be (for details look at this link  ).

* Visas: All foreign visitors to the Republic of Madagascar require entry visa. The tourist visa for stays of 30 to max. 90 days should be obtained on arrival at the airport (recommendet). It's just a immigration stamp in the passeport with the date of validity. The tourist visa for max. 30 days  is as well in 2011  free of charge.  Tourist visa for longer stays are subject to fees of actually 140 000 Ariary (or the equivalent of 62 € / 90 US$).

* Health: No immunizations are necessary. Malaria prophylactics are essential. Drink only bottled water or take water purification tablets. Travel insurance is recommended.

* Currency: As from 1 Jan.2005, the Malagasy Franc (FMG) has been replaced by the ARIARY (AR or MGA).1 Ariary = 5 Fmg,  both values are still some times on the same bill. 1 Euro = approx. 2.700 AR (or 13.500 Fmg). Take cash in Euro (better than  US$) or traveller's cheques (don't forget the bank receipt for your cheques, US$ cheques not smaller than 50,-$, the banks don't take 20,-$ cheques). Attention, if you are bying US$ cash, please control that the series year (very small down to the left side of the president picture on the bill) is later than 2000. Earlier series will not be taken by banks and money changing offices nor by Chanty Beach.

Credit cards are not widely accepted. On Nosy Be only VISA in some hotels/restaurants. There are 3 ATM at the banks in Hell Ville for VISA cards, one for both VISA and MASTERCARD. In Chanty Beach unfortunately no credit cards due to the telephone system.

Some Voices of our Guests *

October 2010

We spent a week staying in a beautiful airy bungalow on the beach at Chanty Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Christian and his family are attentive and caring hosts, going out of their way to share their passion of Madagascar with you and offer helpful suggestions. Best experience - Enjoying an afternoon swim while watching the sun turn the ocean champagne colour as it sets over Sakatia Island.

May 2009

Chanty Beach Hotel Villa, just a few metres from the beach this resort is a quiet hideaway with lovely shady gardens and warm German/Malagasy hospitality (They offer both self-catering chalets and B&B).

Christian and his lovely wife Chantal were great in preparing the most delicious evening meals served right on their beach restaurant!  Christian's knowledge of the island and its people was most entertaining, giving us a good insight on what to expect of these wonderful people. Our accommodation was comfortable - an air-conditioned room, en suite bathroom - clean and spacious!  Off the veranda was a small kitchenette, not that we ever used it too cook as there were more than enough eating spots along this bay. There was however a fully equipped bar fridge - with enough 3horses beer to keep your thirst quenched!

For lunch, we found ourselves repeatedly drawn to the Sambatra B&B - a way further along the beach, which offered the most amazing seafood, and great service. If you have an afternoon to spare when not consuming large amounts of calamari, prawns and fish, catch the ferry to Sakatia Passions - only ten minutes away this is simply a little piece of paradise with fabulous snorkelling in clear blue water.

Each afternoon we enjoyed the best full body massages under the trees of Chanty Beaches lush gardens- at very reasonable prices! A definite must to ensure you get rid of any stress and to ensure a truly relaxing holiday.

We thoroughly enjoyed Chanty Beach, a lovely small Villa with great hospitality.

March 2009

I visited Chanty Beach in the beginning of February 2009, and I must say that I had a great time during my stay on Nosy Be. Those who followed the news might recall that there was some political turmoil in Madagascar at that time, which resulted in quite a number of flight cancellations by Air Madagascar which in turn led to me arriving two days late and having to leave one day early. Besides all the struggles, I didn't see anything at all of any struggles on Nosy Be except three armed soldiers. Even during my due flight cancellations forced stays in Tana, I didn't experience or witness anything violent personally.

However, the time I was able to spend on Nosy Be was absolutely fantastic an interesting. It was my first stay within the tropics, and although not really a "lying at the beach"-type, I enjoyed the beautifully warm waters which were a bit "impure" due to the impacts of a cyclone at Reunion, but just perhaps 20 metres away from my accommodation. After a few days, the weather and the water cleared, and I had a fantastic few days left with great experiences on excursions.

The hosts, Christian and his wife Chantal, were absolutely amiable and providing an amazing and fantastic family-like yet professional service, providing gorgeous dinners and helping organising excursions around the island.

June 2008

"Louise and I agreed that we had one of the best holidays of our lives and hope to be back one of these days. Looking at all our photos brings back very happy memories indeed. The 55kg Sailfish which I was so fortunate to hook into, snorkelling at Tanikely was like swimming inside an aquarium, the buffet & meeting the locals at Sakatia Passions on 2 successive Sundays, the amazing sunsets with images of Dhows in the background against a pink and fading sky, but most of all the variety of DELICIOUS meals provided at Chanty Beach by your very well trained and competent staff. Being in the industry ourselves we have quite a critical eye when it comes to accommodation establishments, but we can quite honestly say that Chanty Beach lacks nothing. The level of service, the hosting, standard of rooms as well as the cleanliness are unsurpassed anywhere! We will happily recommend to all with whom we share our precious memories of a wonderful holiday spent with amazing people in a most perfect setting & climate".

Many thanks

April 2008

Chanty beach was lovely - Christian and Chantal are very nice, and Chantal produces the most heavenly suppers if you stay in for the evening. We did lots of snorkelling straight from the beach, which was literally 30 feet from our room. Bonuses were a bar fridge and aircon, to help us adapt to the very warm and humid climate....a lot of delicious ice-cold beer was consumed lying on the deck chairs and watching the boats go by! We also did a couple of wonderful day trips.

June 2007

We had a stunning time and everything went very smoothly (transfers etc.). Chanty Beach was the perfect spot, very peaceful and quiet with a beautiful garden and a lovely beach. The room (bungalow) was great too, very spacious and private with a gorgeous view from the terrace. The breakfast was simple (fresh fruit, baguette, jam and honey, tea & coffee – you pay extra for juices or cooked breakfast) but always very nice and sufficient. We also had dinner a couple of times and it was always delicious, mainly fish & seafood! Chanty Beach is the perfect place for honeymooners - we very much enjoyed the tranquillity, long walks along the beach, lazing in the garden and going for a swim at sunset! We will definitely be back!

November 2006

Just a quick report back on our honey moon in Nosy Be. We had an amazing and restful time. We however did not realize that we would struggle with the language as we speak no French. This was however not a huge obstacle as it added to the whole adventure.

But despite these little gripes we were so happy with Chanty Beach and out of all the other places we saw we would still choose Chanty if given the choice again. It is very quiet, cozy and private. Christian the owner was also incredibly helpful and informative. The transfer from airport to Chanty went smoothly and the services provided were excellent. I even indulged in a massage in my room that the owner organized. We hired motorbikes and explored the island-the roads been very challenging and battered. We hired a hobby catamaran at Sakatia Island. We did snorkel and saw lots of turtles and it was so great to swim so frequently as the water was so divine. Overall the stretch of beach between Chanty and the rest did not feel too commercialized which is what we appreciated - only minimal harassment. Thanks again

May  2005

Hi Christian and Chantal,

We are back in Australia with wonderful memories of our stay at Chanty Beach. WOW the evening meals you served!! They surpassed those we have had in 5 star hotels! Makes my mouth water just thinking of the oysters, HUGE prawns and of course lobster night. Memories of the entrees too, such variety. Just wish Nosy Be was closer to Australia and we could return next year.

Will always remember our "2 hour" swims in the warm water and the spacious accommodation.

Take care,

Cheers Lyn Butler.

If you are lucky enough to hit on the Chanty Beach at Nosy Be web site DO NOT LOOK ANY FURTHER. This place has excellent spacious accommodation 10 mtrs. from a good beach and warm calm water.  The owners Christian and Chantal Herz are excellent hosts, and the food that Chantal serves is equal to anything you will eat in Europe  at a quarter of the price. If this place was closer to Australia we would be regular visitors.  Thank you Christian and Chantal for helping to make our holiday a memorable one.

Lyn and Lyle Butler , Queensland , Australia.
